The Charleston Chapter of the S.C.G.S. was organized in 1974, one year after the SCGS received its Charter from the State. About thirty or forty very enthusiastic members elected Mrs. Caroline Moore as its first President. The Charleston Chapter now numbers nearly 150 members, the majority being from Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties, South Carolina, but with members from about 20 other states.

The first project taken up by the Charleston Chapter was an
inventory of the Charleston County cemeteries, led by Mr. Robert Babb. Mr. Babb,
a very efficient engineer, made area maps of each "assignment" in
Charleston, Berkeley and Colleton Counties, showing each cemetery in these areas.
The result was the compilation of the Charleston County Cemetery Book now offered
under
Books Available from Chapter.
